Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir

Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, also known as Akmal Nasir, was born on 16 September 1986. He received his early education at Iskandar National Primary School and Taman Pelangi National School in Johor Bahru, followed by Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) from 1999 to 2003, where he excelled academically and in various associations. He then prepared for his higher education at International Education College (INTEC) in Shah Alam in 2004 before pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science and Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, United States, from 2005 to 2009. Before entering mainstream politics, Akmal Nasir was the co-founder and director of the National Oversight and Whistleblowers Centre (NOW) alongside Rafizi Ramli. NOW Malaysia gained prominence for exposing national financial scandals during the administration of former Prime Minister Najib Razak, including alleged corruption in the National Feedlot Corporation (NFC) and misuse of funds by the Malaysian Islamic Economy Development Foundation (YaPEIM). In the 2018 Malaysian general election, he contested and won the Johor Bahru parliamentary seat under the Pakatan Harapan coalition. Following this, he was elected as the 4th Youth Chief of the People's Justice Party (PKR) in the 2018 party election, serving from November 2018 to July 2022. In December 2022, Akmal Nasir was appointed as the Deputy Minister of Local Government Development in the Unity Government administration under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, a position he held until December 2023. In a cabinet reshuffle on 12 December 2023, he was appointed as the Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, deputising for Minister Fadillah Yusof. His appointment to this new ministry underscores the government's focus on prioritising renewable energy.
