He has held various ministerial positions, including Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Communications and Multimedia. He is a member of the Malaysian United Indigenous Party (BERSATU), a component party of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition. He has previously been affiliated with UMNO and PKR.
